Seiko Introduce Prospex Marinemaster Green-Water SJE117J1 and Blue-Water SJE119J1

The Seiko Prospex Marinemaster 1965 Reinterpretation is one of the newest sub-collections in Seiko’s vast range of watches. It was launched only last November as a hybrid between a heritage dive watch from 1965 and the 2000s Marinemaster. Its combination of solid specs, interesting dial and sporty design is about as typical of the Prospex line as it’s possible to be and its success on launch was all but guaranteed. Evidently that’s the case as now, a few months later, Seiko have expanded the sub-collection with two new colourways: the Prospex Marinemaster 1965 Reinterpretation Green-Water SJE117J1 and Blue-Water SJE119J1.

First is the Prospex Marinemaster 1965 Reinterpretation Green-Water SJE117J1. It’s really only green by technicality, being a very dark shade of sage bordering on grey. Also, the connotation of green-water doesn’t sound that appealing in comparison to its bright blue counterpart. If it was positioned more as dusk-ocean of twilight-ocean with the desaturated look of water under starlight, it would sound much more inviting. Anyway, that doesn’t really detract from the fact it’s a cool, darker model that’s great if you’re not a fan of bright colours.

As you may expect, the Blue-Water SJE119J1 edition takes the broad diving bezel and horizontal textured dial and renders them in ocean blue. It’s a much richer and more electric shade than the ice blue model that featured in the original launch. The appeal of an ocean blue dive watch is self-evident, emphasising the aquatic theme.

In terms of structure and specs, both of the new colours are identical to their predecessors. 39.5mm x 12.3mm cases in steel with 200m water resistance housing the calibre 6L37 with 45-hour power reserve and -10/+15 seconds per day accuracy. It would be nice to see a 300m water resistance rating but for now that’s reserved for the 1965 Revival Diver 3-Day 300m.

Interestingly, the new editions have slightly lower price than the original versions as they are £2,930 instead of £2,990. Although the difference of £60 is not likely to make anyone who can’t afford the higher price suddenly jump on the lower one. They’re also still among the most expensive Prospexes in the entire range, reflecting Seiko’s interest in entering the more prestige portion of the diver market alongside their solid foundation in accessible divers.
