It’s hard to believe that it’s already been over a year since Piaget relaunched the Polo 79 collection with the yellow gold edition. It’s a glorious golden stunner with its integrated bracelet and captivating horizontal gadroon design. For Watches & Wonders 2025 it’s back in a fresh interpretation, the Piaget Polo 79 White Gold, which we’ve been hands on with.
In the metal the watch is, if anything, far more spectacular than images can convey. An ode to late 70s, early 80s design with its fusion of expressive shapes and a clear intent to move away from the popular designs of the preceding decades. It was a time of rejuvenation when the world could finally stop referring to it as the post-war period. People wanted something fresh and new, and watches like the Polo certainly delivered on that.
On the wrist, it’s surprisingly svelte despite the bold shapes. It measures 38mm in diameter with a thickness of just 7.45mm. Naturally one of the most satisfying aspects of its construction is the smooth transition between the body of the watch and the bracelet, which is almost imperceptible due to the repeating pattern of polished gadroons and brushed links. As an aside, the finishing is immaculate, especially as you play the light across it thanks to the high lustre of the white gold.
The dial feels more like a continuation of the case really as the pattern continues uninterrupted. Though there is the addition of smooth dot indexes and Dauphine hands so that you can actually read the time. It’s nice and refined. The crown to set the time is pretty slim as well, matching the dress watch vibe of the piece.
Turning the watch over reveals an exhibition caseback through which you can see the 1200P1 Manufacture automatic movement. It’s finished as beautifully as the case with Geneva waves (curving Côtes de Genève) on the plate and perlage below the micro-rotor. It has a 44-hour power reserve.
Considering that the whole thing is gold, the price reflects that. It’s £77,000. If you’re going to spend that kind of money on a luxury dress watch, making it one as instantly recognisable as the Piaget Polo 79 White Gold isn’t the worst idea. It really feels special.
