Jacob & Co. Astronomia Revolution Is World’s First Four-Axis Tourbillon

Jacob & Co. have long had a reputation for being the hip hop watchmaker due to the unabashed way in which they approach luxury watchmaking. Big, ostentatious watches that get in your face and say “yes, I’m embroiled in an international beef publicised during the Superbowl”. However, ostentation aside, on a purely horological level Jacob & Co. are pushing boundaries with the development of increasingly extreme tourbillons like the new Jacob & Co. Astronomia Revolution Four-Axis Tourbillon.

Jacob & Co.’s Astronomia Revolution is the world’s first four-axis tourbillon, a development of the three-axis rotation of the original Astronomia Revolution from 2023. The directions of rotation are a clockwise rotation around the central point of the tourbillon – the standard rotation you find on a single-axis tourbillon. There’s then also a clockwise rotation around the central point of the dial as the tourbillon is suspended on a rotating arm.

The two other axis of rotation are difficult to describe in written words. One is a constant vertical rotation on the end of the arm it’s suspended from, as if it’s a wheel on the end of an axle. The fourth axis is then a lateral motion perpendicular to the line of the arm. If that doesn’t make sense, I don’t blame you. Fortunately, Jacob & Co. have produced multiple videos showing it in motion.

Aesthetically the Jacob & Co. Astronomia Revolution Four-Axis Tourbillon has a similar design to the original Revolution. The 47mm case is produced in gold and the base of the dial is also produced in highly polished gold. However, where the original Revolution had a regular hexagon pattern, the Four-Axis is jagged and random. It’s fun spotting the reflection of the tourbillon in the many facets as it passes above.

As you might expect, the watch is extremely exclusive. It’s limited to just 18 pieces at a price of $700,000 (approx. £580,100). At more than half a milly, there’s a reason only megastars get spotted with J&Co. watches on their wrists.
