I see so many watches cross my desk and briefly flit across the screen of my computer that sometimes it can be very easy to become unfortunately dismissive. Oh, that’s just another such and such watch. Ah yes, the 10th version of the same watch in a slightly different colour. However, that undermines the care and attention lavished upon them by watchmakers and future owners alike. So, while the 2024 collection of Manero Flybacks by Carl F. Bucherer isn’t groundbreaking or revolutionary, let’s still take the time to admire them for what they are: beautiful timepieces.
The cases measure either 43mm or 40mm in a choice of stainless steel or 18k rose gold with smooth, rounded bezels, classic pump chronograph pushers and a large, fluted bezel. It’s the exact right blend of sporty and classy, like an E-Type Jaguar or an Aston Martin DB5. Beautiful curves paired with a surprising turn of speed.
Getting into the specifics, the 2024 Manero Flyback collection consists of two rose gold models at 43mm with either grey or rich blue dials. Three existing steel 43mm models presented on vegan textile straps for the first time with black, silver or grey-blue dials. And lastly a 40mm edition in steel with a grey dial, which can be identified from the 43mm versions as it doesn’t have the sector pattern hour track. It’s definitely one of the coolest with its slightly more minimalist, monochromatic appearance.
Personally, I really like the rose gold and blue dial version. It oozes sumptuous luxury like the flag of the French monarchy with its field of blue and golden fleur-de-lis insignia. Rich and inviting. The sharp facets of its wedge hour markers and openworked hour, minute and chronograph counter hands are also attractive.
Beneath the surface of all six watches presented in the Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback Chronograph 2024 collection is the CFB 1973 automatic calibre. It has a 56-hour power reserve which provides energy to the hour, minute, small seconds, flyback chronograph seconds, 30-minute timer and date complications. It’s viewable through the exhibition caseback.
We’ve seen the Manero Flyback many times before, even at the 40mm size that debuted in 2022 and these are essentially recolours of those and other existing models. They’re also priced the same at £5,750 for steel and £15,700 for gold. However, when a first time buyer of Carl F. Bucherer goes onto their website and finds the 40mm grey launched here, they are absolutely right to instantly fall in love with it.
