While being colourful and eccentric is undoubtedly a Farer signature, in the second half of 2024 they’ve reminded us that they’re equally great at more subtle, sober designs with collections like the Field Watch. Their latest limited edition follows in the same suit with a dark case and dial accented by a flash of jade green. It’s the Farer Endurance Limited Edition, named after Ernest Shackleton’s famous ship and available with either western or eastern Arabic numerals.
Starting with the case, it measures 39.5mm in diameter in steel with a dark, gunmetal grey PVD coating made from titanium carbo-nitrate. This coating increases the scratch resistance beyond the capabilities of bare steel, meaning it’s better suited to taking the occasional knock. Style-wise, it has a classic round shape with a large crown and box-shaped sapphire glass. If I were to define the aesthetic style of the Endurance, I would call it an adventure watch. It has the DNA of both field and pilot’s watches without leaning too far in either direction.
Focussing in on the dial, it has a sector style construction with a raised central disk surrounded by a lower hour scale ring. The centre portion has a vertical brushed finish and the ring is sunray brushed, offering a solid amount of contrast despite sharing the same colour, dark grey. The use of grey also emphasises the jade green hour markers, which are made from Lumicast a combination of ceramic and lume – this is the first time Farer have used Lumicast for eastern Arabic numerals. Around the very edge of the dial is a white minute scale.
Overall, I think it’s a very competent design but it lacks a little of the wow factor I’m used to seeing from Farer. Fortunately, it’s backed up by a powerhouse movement in the La Joux-Perret G101. An automatic movement with a great 68-hour power reserve making it fully weekend proof. It’s also LJP’s soignée edition, which means it has their highest level of finishing, such as Côtes de Genève.
In terms of pricing and availability, each of the versions (western and eastern Arabic numerals) is limited to 100 pieces at a price of £925. Which is slightly higher than Farer’s existing range of 3-hand models due to the added exclusivity. It’s also presented on a custom leather strap featuring a dark upper to match the dial and a jade green lining to match the numerals, which brings the whole piece together.
