One of my personal favourite collections that Oris produce is the Divers Sixty-Five and it is a good time to be a fan of this watch because Oris have not been stingy when it comes to releasing new editions. The summer saw the release of a new suite of Cotton Candy models in steel and in September a brand-new Chronograph version. Now, for the winter they’re returning to the bronze Cotton Candy range with the launch of the Oris Divers Sixty-Five Cotton Candy Sepia.
Upon first seeing this watch I wasn’t that impressed with it. The Cotton Candy range is known for being bright and pastel, and the Sepia has a black dial. Nothing about a black dial makes me think of vibrant carnival attractions or anything associated with the titular treat. However, the more I look at the watch and the way the black dial contrasts to the golden-brown colouration of the 38mm bronze case, the more I begin to like it.
Don’t get me wrong, I still think Cotton Candy is the wrong name for the watch, but I think there is in fact a sugary name that would work: the Oris Divers Sixty-Five Treacle. Or maybe even the Divers Sixty-Five Molasses, rich, dark and sticky. Thematically I think this makes much more sense because the black of the dial looks like a pool of the sugary mixture while the bronze looks like the lighter brown colour you see as light passes through it as you pour it. Just a simple change to its name makes the watch much more playful and fun, rather than the weird connotations of a sepia toned candy floss.
Beyond its name and the new black dial, this release is virtually identical to the original bronze Cotton Candy watches from 2021. Same retro skin-diver aesthetic and same movement beneath the surface. Specifically it’s the Oris Calibre 733, based on the Sellita SW 200-1 with 38-hour power reserve. Not every watch can house the Calibre 400, as much as we would like them to.
The Oris Divers Sixty-Five Treacle… sorry, the Oris Divers Sixty-Five Cotton Candy Sepia is available on either a black rubber strap or three-link bronze bracelet. On the strap it’s £2,100 and on the bracelet it’s £2,400. Ultimately, if you ignore the sugar theming all together, what we have is a relatively accessible bronze dive watch with a black dial and that’s all it needs to be.
